- Requests for reassessments to individual tax returns
How do I handle requests for reassessments to individual tax returns?
The scenario is fairly common: a client brings you an additional slip, and you've already filed the return! Not to worry, you can easily make adjustments to a return using the T1 adjustment request form in ProFile.
I suggest you first create a backup copy of the return you've already filed with CRA by selecting File > Save as, and saving a copy under a different name. You can also use database features to archive a particular file. Next, open the T1 client file that requires adjustment. Go to the Audit menu and select Snapshot > New (or click Alt + F8 and select New). Give your snapshot a name, for example, PreT1Adj.
You can then make the necessary changes to your return by adding or editing information, just as you enter data when you create a new return. For example, if your client brings another T4 slip, then enter the new amount on the T4 Slip.
Use the Form Explorer to open the T1ADJ#. Like other forms that include a # in the name, this form allows multiple copies so you can file additional adjustments to the return as necessary. (You can right-click on the form and select new form to make another copy.)
Go to Section C of the T1ADJ form, and right-click on the first row of the expandable table (Adjustment details of the T1ADJ). Select Adjust form Snapshot#1 (or Adjust from PreT1Adj if you've named your snapshot following the example above) and watch how ProFile automatically calculates the T1ADJ by comparing your original snapshot to the revised data.
All you will need to do now is print a copy of the T1ADJ to file the adjustment with the CRA. You do not need to resubmit the entire return. You will need to mail the T1ADJ to the Enquiries and Adjustments Division of your tax centre, since you cannot EFILE a T1ADJ form.
