Error C=224 occurs in a company file

Error C=224 while Opening File/Running Reports/Backing up/Verifying/Rebuilding Company File

The following message  - Error: C=224  occurs intermittently in QuickBooks 2012 & 2013 when opening a company file, running reports, backing up, verifying, or rebuilding a company file.

Why is this happening

Intuit is aware of the issue and is working on a resolution. This is a non-fatal error that should allow you to use the data file normally without any problems.

The following is a workaround which prevents the error from occurring

Note: this workaround is for Preferences that are unique to each user as well as each company file. This error may continue to appear several times after clicking OK.

  1. Close QuickBooks (using the Task Manager if necessary).
  2. Press and hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard and double-click on the QuickBooks 2012 icon on your desktop. The No Company Open window appears.
  3. Press and hold down the ALT key on your keyboard, select the company file to open, and then release the ALT key once the file is open.
  4. If prompted, enter the User ID and Password, then hold the alt key down again, and press OK.
  5. Release the alt key once the file appears to be open.
  6. Go to Edit > Preferences > General > My Preferences.
  7. Uncheck Beep when recording a transaction.
  8. In the Preferences window choose Desktop view.
  9. In My Preferences, uncheck Show Getting Started Window and change the Desktop option from Save when closing company to Don’t save the Desktop. These settings will also help your company file open faster.
  10. Click OK.
  11. Close and re-open QuickBooks.
