Error: You cannot print directly to the QuickBooks PDF Converter

What is happening

When printing or emailing from QuickBooks, you receive the following error: 'You cannot print directly to the QuickBooks PDF Converter. Try using QuickBooks Save as PDF menu option.'

Note: Intuit replaced the.pdf converter/driver function with more reliable .pdf technology in QuickBooks Pro 2012 (for Windows), Premier 2012, and Enterprise 12. If you upgrade to one of these 2012 products, you should no longer experience this .pdf issue.


Why is this happening

This issue occurs if:

  • The QuickBooks PDF Converter is marked as the default printer.
  • The QuickBooks PDF Converter is damaged.
  • The QuickBooks printing file qbprint.qbp is damaged.
How to fix the problem in QuickBooks 2008-2011

Intuit recommends 3 solutions for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all 3 to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

Solution 1: Choose another printer as the default
Estimated time: 5 minutes

If you still encounter the error, go to solution 2.

Solution 2: Rename the qbprint.qbp file
Estimated time: 10 minutes

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Rename the qbprint.qbp file.
  3. Try to print or email again.

If you still encounter the error, go to solution 2.

Solution 3: Reinstall the QuickBooks PDF Converter
Estimated time: 20 minutes

  1. Click on File > Exit to close QuickBooks.
  2. Click the Microsoft Windows Start button and select Settings > Printers and Faxes.
  3. In the Name column, right-click the QuickBooks PDF Converter and select Delete.
  4. Click Yes to confirm that you want to delete the printer driver and restart the computer.
  5. Open QuickBooks.
  6. Select the Reports menu, and open any report (for example, Company & Financial > Profit & Loss Standard).
  7. Click the Email button, and then select Send report as PDF. QuickBooks automatically reinstalls the PDF printer driver.
  8. Cancel the email and close the report.
