Unable to create PDF files or reconcile accounts using a 32-bit computer

NOTE: These steps and issues apply only to products prior to the QuickBooks 2012 version. QuickBooks 2012 uses a different program to generate .pdf files, so the steps below do not apply to 2012

 

The PDF Converter that ships with QuickBooks 2008-2011 does not work with the 32-bit version of Microsoft Vista.

To install a new PDF Converter for a 32-bit version of Vista, complete the following steps below.

Vista 32 bit version

Run QuickBooks as an Administrator

  1. Right-click the QuickBooks program icon on your desktop.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Select the Compatibility tab.
  4. Click the box next to “Run this program as an administrator” to insert a checkmark.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Double-click the QuickBooks icon on your desktop.
  7. Enter the Administrator password if prompted.
Download the PDF Converter
  1. Download the new PDF Converter. Click here to download.
  2. Note: Save the folder to your desktop.

  3. Double-click the icon on your desktop to open the folder.
    • Click Run.
    • Click Allow.
    • Click Browse, select Desktop, then click OK.
    • Click Unzip to extract the files.
  4. Double-click the amyumi_install folder on your desktop
  5. Double-click the Install.exe (139 KB) Application file.
  6. If the User Account Control message appears. Click Continue.
  7. The Amyuni Document Converter screen appears. Click OK.
  8. Note: Ignore the message notifying you that the program may not be installing correctly.

  9. Click the Start button.
  10. From the Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound.
  11. Click Printers.
  12. Right-click “Intuit Internal Printer” and select Properties, then select the Ports tab.
  13. Click the box next to “LPT1” to insert a checkmark.
  14. Click Apply and then OK.
Windows XP


  1. Go to Start and choose Printers and Faxes.
  2. Right-click the QuickBooks PDF Converter and choose Properties.
  3. Click the Ports tab and then click the Add Port.
  4. Enter NUL: in the Enter a port name field, click OK, then click Close.
  5. Be sure that the NUL: port is selected in the Ports list; then click Apply and click the Advanced tab.
  6. Select Spool print documents so program finishes printing faster.
  7. Clear the Enable advanced printing features checkbox; choose Print directly to printer, select Apply and OK.
  8. Go to Start and choose Run.  Enter %windir% in the Open field and OK. If you see These files are hidden, click Show the contents of this folder under System Tasks.
  9. Right-click the System 32 folder and choose Properties, select the Security tab.
  10. In the Group or user names list, select Users.  In the Permissions for Users list, select both Read and Write under the Allow column. Click Apply and OK.
  11. Restart the computer.

 

To remove FaxTalk Communicator

If you have FaxTalk Communicator installed, it must be removed before QuickBooks can save PDF files.

To remove FaxTalk Communicator

  1. Go to Start and choose Control Panel
  2. Double click Add or Remove Programs. (Vista, double-click Programs and Features.)
  3. Select FaxTalk Communicator and Remove (Uninstall).
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, delete and reinstall all printers in Windows.  This will require you to have your printer drivers available.
