How do I automatically update QuickBooks?

If your computer is connected to the Internet, QuickBooks can automatically install the latest update and tax table when they become available by turning on the Automatic Update feature.

We recommend that you turn on this feature so that you'll always have the latest update installed automatically as they become available on the web. We release updates for QuickBooks Payroll and other supported versions which include enhancements, new tax tables, bug fixes and the like. We support the current year plus two years back.

  Watch the Automatic Updates Video.

Turn Automatic Update on:
  1. Go to the Help menu (for QuickBooks 2007 and earlier, go to the File menu), and select Update QuickBooks.
  2. Click the Options tab.
  3. In the Automatic Update field, click Yes to turn on Automatic Update.
  4. Click Save.

QuickBooks will notify you whenever there is a new update, and asks you to install it.

If you have this feature turned off, you can still check for and install updates yourself using this feature. To check for available updates, click the Update Now tab, then click the Get Updates button. You should do this approximately once a month if Automatic Update is not turned on.
