Eligible Dependant: Can I claim my spouse?

For tax purposes, your spouse cannot be your dependant. A specific tax credit (the amount for spouse or common-law partner) is available when one spouse has low income.

TurboTax will automatically calculate the spouse or common-law partner amount for your return when you indicate your married status and complete your spouse's personal information section.

Also, certain credits on one spouse's return can be transferred to the other spouse's return if they are not needed to eliminate tax for that spouse.
