Claiming provincial medical insurance as medical expense

You cannot claim payments to a provincial health insurance plan (e.g., Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) and BC Medical Services Plan (MSP)) for any of the provinces or territories except Québec. To find out what medical expenses you can claim, click here.

Medical insurance premiums in Québec are acceptable deductions on a provincial return, as long as your 12-month medical expense claim period ends on December 31st. (Revenu Québec regards the year’s premiums as being paid on December 31). Payments made to an insurer or a group insurance plan to cover medical or hospital expenses are also acceptable in Québec. For Québec-specific information on medical expenses, see the Revenu Québec website.
