- Enter medical expenses on both my spouse's and my own tax return
How do I enter medical expenses on both my spouse's and my own tax return?
Medical expenses must total more than 3% of your net income, or $2,024 (for 2010), whichever is less. By combining medical expenses on one return, you are more likely to reach that 3% mark. It is usually more beneficial for the lower income earner to claim all the medical expenses, as the 3% amount will be lower. TurboTax is designed to claim all medical expenses on one return. There is no limit on the total amount of medical expenses you can claim in a year.
If you still want to split the medical expenses between you and your spouse, you must override line 330 of Schedule 1 and enter the appropriate amount on that line for both the taxpayer and spouse. Depending upon your incomes, there may be rare circumstances where it would be beneficial to split the medical receipts.
