QuickTax 2009: QuickTax has encountered a corrupt or incompatible resource file

It's possible that your tax return data file has become corrupt.

Fortunately, each time you save your tax return file, QuickTax saves a backup copy of the file. You can usually recover your tax return by opening this backup file.

  1. Shutdown and then restart your computer.
  2. On your computer's Desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.
  3. Navigate to the folder where you installed QuickTax. By default, this is C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\QuickTax\2xxx
  4. Identify the file that you cannot open (for example, John&Mary.q08)
  5. Immediately below that file, there should be a backup version with the same name, but a file extension of .qbk.
  6. Right-click on the .qbk file and then click Rename.
  7. Rename the file and change the file extension to .q08 if it is a 2008 return, .q09 if the file is for a 2009 return, etc.
For example, you could rename John&Mary.qbk to John&Mary_1.q08.
  8. Open the renamed file in QuickTax.

If the problem persists, proceed to Step 2.

STEP 2: Uninstall QuickTax

  1. Click the Start button in your Windows® task bar.
  2. Select Settings and Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs and find QuickTax in the list.
  4. Click Remove.

STEP 3: Reinstall QuickTax
Follow the installation instructions printed on your CD.
