Can I file for free using TurboTax?
TurboTax offers several free tax options for low income earners and people with simple, straightforward tax returns.
You can choose from 2 Free TurboTax online editions. Or, use any TurboTax online edition at no cost with the TurboTax Freedom Program. Click the links to find out if you qualify.
The TurboTax Online Free edition is made for people who earned less than $60,000 in gross household income, have only T-Slip income with no deductions, and don't need much tax guidance.
The Free version is not for everyone. To qualify, you must:
- earn less than $60,000 in gross household income (before taxes)
- You are claiming T4 slip income, such as T4, T4A, T4(OAS), etc.
- (If Applicable) You have tip income or pension income to claim
- Not be self-employed
- Not have investment income
- Get standard federal & provincial deductions
TurboTax Student Online Edition helps you claim tip income & tuition transfers to expenses like textbooks and public transit.
You qualify to use TurboTax Student Online Edition if:
- You paid tuition during the tax year (you have a T2202A or TL11 slip), and
- To file for FREE, your household income cannot exceed $20,000 gross (before taxes)
- If you make more than the $20,000 limit, don't worry. You can still prepare your return. When you wish to file the return, you'll pay the low Standard Online price
The TurboTax Freedom Program allows many Canadians to prepare their 2011 tax returns using an online edition of TurboTax - for FREE.
