Medical expenses: Enter expenses for a dependant who is over 18?

Enter Medical Expenses in the TurboTax interview (Online/Desktop)

How to enter medical expenses for a dependant who is over 18 :

  1. At the top of the screen, select the Personal Profile tab. Click Continue.
  2. On the second Personal Profile screen, answer Yes to the question "Did you have medical expenses for yourself, your spouse or your dependants?" and click Continue.
  3. Continue through the rest of the profile. Once finished, you can procedd through the rest of the tax return, or click the DEDUCTIONS tab to jump directly to the section containing  the medical expense screens.
  4. On Your Medical Profile screen, check the boxes for "Medical receipts" and "You paid medical expenses for a dependant (other than your spouse or children under 18 years of age)", then click Continue.
  5. On the Medical Expenses screen, select Enter Expenses on [taxpayer]'s return.
  6. Fill the appropriate fields for yourself, your spouse and your dependant who is over 18.
  7. When you've entered all your medical expenses, click Done and then click Done with Medical Expenses. The Medical Expense Claim screen will open.
  8. Enter your 12-month medical claim period and then click Continue.
  9. On the Dependant Medical Expense screen, enter again the amount of medical expenses that applied to your dependant who is over 18. If you're preparing a spousal return, it is more favourable to claim the expenses on the lower income spouse's return. Select the appropriate box. Click Continue.
Enter Medical Expenses in the Forms method:
  1. Ensure you are in Forms view. If you are not, click Go to Forms.
  2. From the View menu, select Tax Info Slips (T-Slips). The T-Slip entry window opens.
  3. On the left side of the T-Slip entry window, click the Receipts button.
  4. From the Receipts list, click Medical.
  5. Enter your medical receipts in the areas provided, then click Save & Close. The medical expense amount is transferred to Line 330 of your T1 General form.

    Note: If you're preparing a spousal return, it is more favourable to claim the expenses on the lower income spouse's return. However, if you don't want to transfer medical expenses to your spouse or common-law partner, make sure you select your name at the top of the Medical Expense entry window.
