Can I claim medical expenses that I paid for a dependant who was not my underrage child?

A dependant doesn't necessarily mean your underage child. You can also claim the portion of eligible medical expenses that you or your spouse or common-law partner paid for the following persons who depended on you for support: your or your spouse or common-law partner's parent, grandparent, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew who was a resident of Canada at any time in the year.

For more information and instructions on how to claim these amounts, follow the steps below.

  1. Click Help.
  2. Select the Index tab and enter medical expenses in the keywork field.
  3. In the list that appears, select allowable amount for other dependants. You will find all the information you need in that topic.

Note: You can claim, as a medical expense, costs that qualify for the dependant relative's maximum deduction if they are not claimed elsewhere.
