- Click the Print & File tab at the top of the EasyStep window.
- If you have not reviewed your return, you'll be prompted to do so now. You must complete the review section before you can use NETFILE.
- If you prepared a tax return for your spouse or common-law partner as well as for yourself, choose who will file first.
The CRA requires that each taxpayer file his or her own return. That means you have to submit your returns through NETFILE one at a time -- you cannot send them together.
- In the NETFILE Your Tax Return screen, select NETFILE.
To view a step-by-step video from within the product on the NETFILE process, click View NETFILE Demonstration. Otherwise, click Continue. - On the next few screens, review the information about using the CRA's NETFILE service.
Click the underlined definitions for more information about items on these screens. - If you have NETFILE errors, you must fix them before you can NETFILE. Click Fix and follow the instructions to fix the error.
- NETFILE warnings are general situations that may or may not apply to you. Review them and either fix them or confirm that they do not apply to you.
- Download your return to your hard drive in a special format (a .TAX file)
- a) In the "CRA NETFILE (Step 1 of 3)" screen, click Step B (Download and Save your NETFILE ".tax" File).
- b) In the File Download window that opens, click Save.
- c) In the Save As window, select a folder for your .TAX file(s), then click Save again.
Be sure to write down exactly where you saved the file! You need to be able to find the .TAX file easily in a later step. - d) Click Done with .tax download.
- On the "CRA NETFILE (Step 2 of 3)" screen, you're prompted to gather the information you need to use the CRA's NETFILE service (including your personal access code).
If you didn't receive a personal access code from the CRA, contact them at 1 800 714-7257 to get one. Then click Continue. - On the "CRA NETFILE (Step 3 of 3)" screen, click NETFILE (NAME)'S Return. This launches a second Web browser and connects to the NETFILE Web site.
Note: The CRA requires that you use an independent Web browser, not your tax preparation software, to submit your return. - Enter the required information in the CRA NETFILE screens.
- When your confirmation number appears, write it down and store it with a printed copy of your tax return.
- You can only use NETFILE to file your current year's return. To file a return for a prior year, you must file it by mail.
- When you NETFILE your return, you do not need to submit your T-slips or receipts. But keep them for 6 years in case the CRA asks to see them.
- If you have a balance owing, you can use NETFILE and then make your payment to the CRA through your bank. You can do this using online banking, telephone banking, or in person.
