Can I transfer data from last year's tax return into TurboTax Online?

TurboTax Online allows files to be transferred from last year's online account as well as TurboTax desktop files. You can also transfer data from UFile and H&R Block tax files into TurboTax. This helps to avoid re-entering personal information and carry-forward amounts.

NEW FOR 2011:

***NOTE***: TurboTax Online TY11uses an improved and more secure method for customers to sign in to TurboTax Online. When you log into TurboTax Online 2011, you will be asked to create a new account, and select a username and password.

There may be cases where your UserID is taken by a different user. In these cases, choose a new User ID. You will still be able to carry forward your prior year tax returns, but you might have a new user ID and password for the 2011 online account. If you did have to change your UserID or password, you won't be able to use the NEW login credentials in older versions of TurboTax Online. For older versions, use the old UserID and password you used to access the 2010 online account.

If you used TurboTax CD/Download last year

If you used the desktop version of TurboTax last year, follow these steps to carry forward your tax data to the TurboTax Online version. You can carry forward data from the previous tax year only.

  1. Sign in to TurboTax Online at 2011.turbotaxonline.ca
  2. When you get to the Transfer 2010 Data  screen, click Transfer 2010 Data.
  3. When you get to the following screen, click Browse to find your 2010 Turbotax file on your computer. You are looking for a file with the following file extension: .tt10. By default, your tax file location for the 2010 file should be: Desktop\My Documents\TurboTax\2010.
  4. Select the file you want to transfer data from and click Transfer.
  5. You'll be shown a summary of the information that is being transferred. Examples of information that can be transferred include personal information, and unused credits for RRSP or tuition. Click Continue.
  6. TurboTax transfers your data. You are now ready to begin your tax return.

If you used TurboTax Online last year

To bring forward your tax information from last year's return, you must log in to TurboTax Online 2011 using the same UserID and password that you used for TurboTax Online 2010.

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax Online account using the same UserID and password from last year.
  2. Follow the onscreen instructions. When you get to the Transfer 2010 Data screen, click Transfer 2010 Data
  3. TurboTax searches our servers for tax returns created with this account, and lists them for you. Select the one you want to transfer, then click Transfer.
  4. You'll be shown a summary of the information that is being transferred. Examples of information that can be transferred include personal information, and unused credits for RRSP or tuition. Click Continue.
  5. TurboTax transfers your data. You are now ready to begin your tax return.
